The Fort McMurray Oil Barons allowed the opening goal in their second round playoff opener Wednesday night at the Casman Centre, but came back strong with four straight goals to take a lead over Sherwood Park that they would not relinquish.

Two early third period goals by the Crusaders made the game close at 4-3, but a Mike Puddifant point shot and Killian Hutt empty netter sealed the deal for the Barons, giving them a 1-0 series lead.

The game was a very chippy affair with several hard hits and after-the-whistle scrums.

Fort McMurray went 3 for 8 on the powerplay, taking advantage of undisciplined play by the visitors, while the Crusaders did not convert on only one powerplay chance that the home side afforded them.

Markus Gerbrandt was named first start with one goal and two assists; Kevin Lacroix chipped in with his team-leading sixth playoff goal and an assist, as well as checking a Sherwood Park player into his bench.

Colton Parayko also registered three points with a goal and two assists.

Game 2 of the series gets going Thursday night at the Casman Centre at 8pm.
