The Edmonton Journal reports that the work camp population north of the city could grow by almost a third.

It says there are 48 work camp applications right now, for a total of 17,000 new beds.

There are currently about 31 thousand people in camps according to the Oilsands Developers Group, but the municipality says it could actually be more than 40 thousand.

The municipality says it wants to see the camp population brought down to about 23 thousand people by encouraging more to become permanent residents.
