Fort Chip winter road limited to overnight travel

The Fort Chipewyan Winter Road is only open from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m., the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo announced today.

Use of the road between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. is prohibited.

The weight limit is now 4,500 kg, and the road is restricted to 4×4 vehicles.

The Winter Road will be assessed for closure on a daily basis.

The speed limit remains 50 km per hour.

Motorists are advised that there are no regular services on the Winter Road like gas stations or road patrols. Cell phone coverage is very limited. Travelers must be prepared for emergency situations. Portable rest stations will be removed at the end of the week.
