Canadian country stars headline Canada Rocks

Blue Rodeo will headline this year’s Canada Day concert at Macdonald Island with Corb Lund and Doc Walker.

There’ll be a free concert on the Friday of Canada Day weekend featuring Joel Plaskett.

Events Wood Buffalo Executive Director David Whitelock says he wanted to expand the genres for this year’s Canada Rocks.

“I did a lot of consultation, as we all do, to find out what people here want to see,” he said. “I spent my first couple of months in the pubs – not drinking, I have to add – just meeting people and finding out what their tastes were.”

The venue at Mac Island will be about half the size of last year’s KISS concert.

Whitelock says he’s still settling into his new role with the organization.

“For me there’s obviously a little bit of experimentation, there’s a little bit of risk in there, but you need that, to make things grow,” he said. “But I’m very confident that we’re going to exceed our expectations.”

He says they’re still working on a few additional acts that will be announced soon.

Tickets will go on sale on Tuesday, May 1 at 10:00 a.m. at canada-rocks.com or at MacDonald Island Park
