Province will try to fast-track 63: Redford

Premier Alison Redford says her government will try to accelerate the twinning of Highway 63.

“I have asked our department to take a look at what an accelerated schedule will look like,” Redford said. “I think it’s a priority to move ahead with that.”

Addressing the issue for the first time since last week’s fiery crash, Redford noted the importance of 63.

“Highway 63 is a unique road in this province,” she said. “It’s busy, there are safety issues on that road, of course we know there are challenges with respect to the construction.”

But despite those challenges, she says she expects faster completion could be possible.

“In our current capital plan, we have always anticipated that at least 50% of that road would be twinned within 3 years,” she said. “We need to act faster on that, and I will be asking our transportation minister to make that a priority.”

The new cabinet will be sworn in next week.
