Greenpeace blocks traffic in Vancouver to protest oil sands

Greenpeace protesters blocked traffic in Vancouver this morning to protest the oil sands.

Two people rappelled from the Lion’s Gate Bridge which goes across the Burrard Inlet holding a banner.

Greenpeace spokesperson Melina Laboucan-Massimo says they wanted to draw attention to the consequences of expanding Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline.

“Hundreds of supertankers could potentially pass through on their way to fill up at a terminal here in the Burrard Inlet,” she said. “So this is actually one of the places where an oil spill could happen.”

The banner the protesters hung read “save our coast, no tar sands pipelines”.
