The leader of the federal New Democrats will visit Fort McMurray and the oilsands for the first time today.
Thomas Mulcair is scheduled to meet with Mayor Melissa Blake, and also take a tour of Suncor’s operations.
Mulcair was urged to visit the region, after comments that have garnered accusations of him being anti-oilsands development and anti-western Canada.
He came under fire after saying that oilsands development was causing an inflated Canadian dollar, which in turn was damaging the manufacturing sector in Ontario and Quebec.
