Random drug tests are coming to the oil sands.

Energy and construction companies including Suncor, CNRL, and Total have joined to form a new group that will randomly test employees.

Those tests could start as early as this year; Suncor tests will start October 15th.

“We have an obligation to maintain a safe work environment,” said Suncor spokesperson Sneh Seetal. “And the random testing that we’ve put in place will work to address and minimize any safety risks in the workplace.”

The project will last two years before being evaluated.

While employees who are found to have a dependency could be enrolled in treatment, the group also says those that aren’t dependent can then be fired.
