Kearl construction expected to wrap up by the end of the year

The last of Imperial Oil’s module megaloads destined for the Kearl mine made its way to Alberta this month.

Several modules are in the Edmonton area, being reassembled for the last leg of their trip up to the site.

Transporting the equipment had gotten plenty of opposition from environmentalists, and also saw delays in the permitting process. The delays did not affect the construction completion date, as the company had contingency plans in place, including altering the construction schedule.

Construction for Kearl is running on time, and is expected to wrap up by the end of this year.

The last module crossed the Canadian border on June 11th.

Kearl is expected to produce 110,000 barrels per day at start-up, which is planned to expand to 345,000 bpd by the year 2020.
