City to borrow $30m for major downtown traffic fix

Council has agreed to borrow almost 30 million dollars for a project that could make a big difference in downtown traffic.

Prairie Loop Boulevard will now be extended along the Clearwater from Riedel to Morrison streets, and be made 2 lanes in each direction.

That means there’ll be a 4-lane road along the north edge of the city running parallel with Franklin.

Councillor Russell Thomas sees that as a big help.

“If we can throw some dollars at this to address, what many will identify as the number one issue that we’re dealing with, transportation, I think it’s a good use of resources,” he said.

Thomas lives downtown and knows what Franklin can be like.

“There is the odd time when there are issues during the rush hour driving home where it takes an hour to get back to my house from one end of Franklin to the other,” he said. “And the reason for that is we do not have the parallel options to get that traffic moving.”

The road should be finished by 2014.
