Heavy rain caused a few sporadic power outages in the city last night, but things were much worse farther south.
There were reports of a tornado in the Didsbury area that tore the roof off of a home and destroyed barns; but nobody was injured.
Olds resident Greg Erikson describes their storm.
“It blew open my back door, the wind was so powerful, and the rain was so powerful,” he said. “It lasted 5 to 10 minutes, but it was probably one of the most powerful storms I’ve seen in my life.”
Didsbury resident Greg Norris says he had to pull over because of hail on Highway 2 north of Innisfail.
“At that point it was wind, rain, lightning, everything,” he said. “I probably should’ve stopped again, but it was probably safer to keep going and try to get through it.”
There was also a report of another tornado near Halkirk, 205 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, and three twisters in Saskatchewan.
There were just under 30 millimetres of rain yesterday in Fort McMurray.
The rainfall warning for the region is still in effect but the weather should let up this afternoon.
