Local educators highlight religious discrimination in school board voting

School board voting in Alberta is getting some national media attention thanks to the complaints of a couple of Fort McMurray educators.

The National Post ran a story today quoting local public school secretary Elaine Moore, who was barred from voting in the recent public school board by-election because she’s catholic.

It also quotes Thickwood Heights School principal Paul Smith, who calls the law antiquated and undemocratic.

Under current law, even non-practicing catholics who send their kids to public schools aren’t allowed to vote in public school board elections.

That law was going to be changed by the new Education Act, but that bill is now being tweaked.

The Alberta Catholic School Trustees’ Association opposes changing the law.
