Driver in head-on collision writes apology to city

A man who says he was the one who caused yesterday morning’s head-on crash on Thickwood Boulevard has written a letter to the city apologizing.

Tim Bland says in the letter than he doesn’t remember getting into his vehicle and has no idea why he ended up driving that morning.

But he says he’s deeply sorry to 39-year old Tim Murphy, who was injured, as well as his family, and the entire city.

Wood Buffalo RCMP say they will be laying charges against the 29-year old driver in the collision, but can’t yet confirm his name.

Here is the full letter:

To the residents of Fort McMurray:

I was the impaired driver who was involved in a head on collision in Thickwood Wednesday morning.

I am writing to express my deepest apologies to the other driver, Tim Murphy, his family and the residents of Ft. McMurray and everyone who was affected by this accident. It was with profound regret and sadness that I regained sobriety and realised what had happened. I have no recollection of getting in my vehicle and I do not know how or why I ended up on the road driving impaired. I can only imagine the anger felt towards me by Mr. Murphy, his family and every resident of Ft. McMurray. I am deeply sorry for the pain, anger and frustration which has been caused. I know that nothing I say can change what has happened but I want everyone to know I’m deeply sorry and in shock that this has occurred.

I only hope now that I am able to make up for this accident through the actions I take during the rest of my life and to continuing service to the community however possible. I will be seeking help to confront the issues which led to this situation and I hope that I am able to pass it on to anyone else who may be in a similar situation to ensure that they don’t make the same terrible mistake. I will be contacting Tim the first opportunity I have to offer any assistance that I can to him and his family.

I am deeply, deeply sorry that this has happened.

Sincerely,
Tim Bland
