Denis: "We will be seeing aerial enforcement" on Highway 63

Police will soon be patrolling Highway 63 from the skies.

Provincial justice minister Jonathan Denis says while there are no timelines yet, the province will implement periodic aerial enforcement on the road.

“We will be seeing aerial enforcement in the near future,” the minister clearly confirmed.

“You have an airplane that flies over,” explained Denis, “and the traffic enforcement on the ground would pull the offender over.”

He says that would not only increase enforcement, but also visibility of that enforcement to increase safety.

Denis says the government is also considering legislation to allow for vehicle seizures.

“And when I talk about seizures, it’s not someone who’s going 10 or 20 over the limit,” he emphasized. “We’re talking people who are going 50 over the limit, and pose a serious and present danger to everyone on the road.

“It is on the table, but we want to make sure it is the last resort,” he added. “We will only put it in, in the event that the additional measures that we have on Highway 63 are not successful.”

He pointed to the recently-announced increase in police presence as an example of those additional measures.

The minister was in town to meet with the mayor and local MLAs.
