Thickwood lights hopefully down by Thursday

An end is in sight to the massive backups on Thickwood and southbound 63.

Alberta transportation spokesman Trent Bancarz says the temporary traffic lights should be gone hopefully by Thursday.

“We were hoping they’d be gone a little sooner,” he said. “But some of the rain on the weekend delayed finishing that new merge lane.”

Bancarz says they really didn’t have any other option but the lights.

“The way it was, the merges were not going that well,” he said. “So this is a safe way to move the traffic until we can lengthen that merge lane a little bit and make the traffic flow smoother through there.”

He says once that work is done, it’ll be back to a long merge lane – no lights, no yields – for the foreseeable future.
