Mi Marathon set for Sunday at Birchwood Trails

Fort McMurray, AB, September 5, 2012 – The community is headed for a record year at the Mi Marathon, which will take place on Sunday at the Birchwood Trails in Thickwood Heights.

Through Tuesday, there were just over 200 registrants for the five-race event, equaling last year’s total numbers with registrations being accepted until Saturday at 4:00 p.m. MT. With a half-marathon, 10km and 5km races and the new Kids Fun Run scheduled along with the full marathon, organizers are expecting close to 300 participants on Sunday.

“The Mi Marathon features a race for everyone including the Kids Fun Run for children 3-8 years of age,” said Jodie Mercier, General Manager of Sport and Recreation at MacDonald Island Park. “We sincerely thank all of the volunteers that have come on board to assist our staff in executing the event on Sunday and we welcome community members to step up to the start line at Birchwood Trails if they haven’t yet registered.”

The full Mi Marathon schedule, fees and registration tab can be found at macdonaldisland.ca. The course begins and finishes at the Doug Barnes Cabin at 190 Tamarack Way.

Registrants are able to pick up their Mi Marathon race package on the first floor of the Suncor Community Leisure Centre on Saturday from Noon to 4:00 p.m.
