Shell green lights carbon capture project

Shell has given the final go-ahead to building the oil sands’ first carbon capture project.

The Quest project will be built by Shell, Chevron, and Marathon Oil, with almost a billion dollars coming from tax money.

It’ll capture CO2 emissions from the company’s Scotford upgrader and inject them underground into a rock formation north of the upgrader.

It’ll store more than a million tonnes of CO2 a year and reduce the upgrader’s emissions by 35 percent.
