The Keyano Huskies hockey team came away with a win in its first-ever game Saturday afternoon.

They beat Grant MacEwan 5-2 in their pre-season opener, coming back from a 2-0 deficit.

The game was a pretty rough one – and head coach Paul Strand says fans can expect that going forward.

“I think we’ll always be a physical team,” he said. “I don’t like the roughing after the whistles, I don’t like the stuff that’s going to put people in danger, but we’ve been hitting in practice because that’s kind of the expectation.”

The rink at Mac Island was packed for the game, something Strand says the team appreciated.

“You never know, everybody said they were coming, and you never really know until they get here whether they truly are coming, so I was very happy,” said Strand. “Nate Bedford, who works here as the assistant coach, said that was probably the biggest crowd they’ve ever had here for a game, which was nice to hear.”

Defenceman Mitch Galbraith scored the first goal in team history, while Bryce Wilson had a hat trick.
