Breastfeeding Clinic To Support New & Expectant Moms

FORT McMURRAY – Local mothers and expectant moms who plan to breastfeed their newborns can access support from a certified lactation consultant and public health nurses at a new Alberta Health Services (AHS) clinic, scheduled to open next week.

The Public Health Breastfeeding Clinic will offer free consultation and assessment for breastfeeding mothers and their infants starting Sept. 25.

“Families may need support to successfully breastfeed their babies and maintain the balance of home, family and work commitments,” says public health supervisor Jennifer Splaine.  “We are confident the breastfeeding clinic will provide some of that support, including counselling and clinical follow-up of the mother and infant, which can significantly increase the percentage of infants exclusively fed with breast milk for the first six months of life.”

Global health organizations, governmental agencies and health professional associations recommend breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of life, with continued breastfeeding for two years. Breastfeeding offers protection against numerous childhood illnesses, contributes to optimal growth and physical development, and prevents the development of many diseases in adulthood. Breastfeeding also helps build a unique bond between mother and baby that can last a lifetime.

The Public Health Breastfeeding Clinic is located in the Community Health Services building,
113 Thickwood Blvd. Visits are by appointment only. Referral for service can be sought from a health care provider or by self-referral. Please contact Fort McMurray Public Health at
780-791-6247 for more information.

The launch of the Public Health Breastfeeding Clinic is part of AHS’ Wood Buffalo Baby Friendly Initiative, funded by the Northern Lights Health Foundation.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than 3.5 million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
