Public opposes Nexen deal: poll

A new poll has found most Canadians oppose the takeover of Nexen by a Chinese state-owned oil giant.

78 percent also believe foreign governments shouldn’t be allowed to control Canadian resources.

Mario Canseco with Angus Reid calls this a unique situation.

“The real thing that is making Canadians uneasy about this is the fact that we’re dealing with the state government of China, not necessarily a regular company,” he said.

58 percent were in favour of blocking the takeover.

The feds recently extended the review period of the deal by 30 days.

The poll also shows opposition is stronger here in Alberta – only 22 percent support the deal, while 63 percent are against it.
