Deadly day on Hwy 63

The Edmonton Journal is reporting a 68-year-old man died in a single-vehicle accident on Highway 63 Saturday morning.

Boyle RCMP responded to the rollover at kilometre 91, north of Wandering River, just before noon Saturday.

Police have determined the vehicle was travelling southbound and rolled, partially ejecting the male driver from the vehicle. He was not wearing his seat belt, RCMP say.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

A fatal single-vehicle rollover also occurred Saturday afternoon near Newbrook, located 111 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.

At about 2 p.m. Redwater RCMP responded to the crash scene on Highway 63, three kilometres north of Newbrook.

The passenger of the vehicle died as a result of the rollover and subsequent vehicle fire.

RCMP said the driver, a 20-year-old man from Fort Saskatchewan, is in custody and charges are pending. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash. The section of Highway 63 where the rollover occurred is closed as police investigate.

The age, gender and name of the deceased have not been released.
