Crude is no more corrosive

A new report says that bitumen-derived crude in is no more corrosive in pipelines than other crudes.

The American Society for Testing and Materials International published the results in its Guide G205.

Research from several groups measured the corrosivity of different crude oils under pipeline conditions.

Low levels come from removing water which is corrosive and mud and sands that is erosive upstream of the lines.

Current requirements allow less than point-five percent of water and sediment by volume to run through the lines.

Natural Resources Canada says that the guide allows direct comparison of the corrosivity.

It also says that with the gathered information, it is one step closer to making an industry-wide standard test for crude oils in pipelines.
