The former head of Environment Canada says there’s too much emphasis on the oil sands in the future of Canada’s economy.

Paul Boothe wrote an opinion piece for Postmedia criticizing recent forecasts from the OECD and Deloitte which said Canada would be an international leader in growth because of the oil sands.

He says it’s too risky to rely on volatile natural resource prices for growth.

He concludes that the country needs a more balanced approach to economic growth, which includes other sectors like manufacturing.
