Mac Island cuts ribbon on brand new gym

Mac Island has officially cut the ribbon on its new gym.

The renovated Total Fitness Centre is twice the size of the old one, with 90 percent new equipment.

Chief Operating Officer Tim Reid says he never would’ve expected to need a new gym within two-and-a-half years, but it’s a challenge they accepted.

“I’ve always challenged our team to make sure that we deliver in a world-class way, and that we don’t ever cut corners,” he said. “This probably speaks to our dedication to the fact that when something isn’t a leader in its field, then we need to make it better.”

Reid says they’re confident it’ll be big enough for the long term.

“We’ve run it out by ten years, and we think that it’ll be accessible,” he said. “But this is Fort McMurray, and one of the unique things that we have is exceptional growth, and I would like nothing more than to be sitting here in two and a half years trying to find out how to make our fitness centre bigger again, because I think it’s a great statement on where we are, and the health of our region.”

Reid also unveiled the new MiKids program, an endowment fund that will provide financial assistance for families that want to access programs.
