Fire-related deaths double during holiday season

RMWB Emergency Service Fire Truck

Provincial reports show that the risk of fire-related deaths double during the holidays between December 15th and the 31st.

The municipality is reminding you to be fire safe this holiday season.

In a release the city Fire Marshall Nick Brennan says that during the hustle and bustle of the season, practicing fire prevention can often be overlooked.

(FROM RELEASE) Regional Emergency Services is recommending all homeowners to practice the following preventative measure to decrease the risk of home fires:

-Never leave cooking unattended.  Cooking is one of the leading causes of home fires.
-Never leave a candle unattended and always blow candles out prior to leaving the home or sleeping.
-Read all lighting instructions carefully and only use for the specified purpose (e.g., indoor/outdoor).
-Never overload an electrical circuit.
– Ensure all decorations, including artificial trees, are fire resistant, non-combustible and non-conductive.  Fresh trees should have a high moisture level and should be immersed in 2 to 3 litres of water to prevent drying.
-Do not hang stockings or flammable materials from the fire place mantel.
-Keep a multipurpose extinguisher in your home.
-Ensure you have working smoke detectors on each level of your home.
– Develop and practice your home escape plan!
