Shania Twain's Vegas comeback

Shania Twain has taken over Sin City. After an eight-year hiatus from performing, the crossover country star made a triumphant return to the stage last night (Dec. 1) at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, kicking off what will be a two-year residency in the venue’s 4,300 seat Colosseum Theater.

Filled with flashy costumes (by designer Marc Bouwer), slick visuals and eye-popping theatrics one would expect of a Vegas extravaganza — Twain’s show, titled ‘Shania: Still the One,’ treated a packed house to a 90-minute, 18-song set that gave fans a tour through some of the most memorable hits from her celebrated career. The crowd treated the 47-year-old singer with a palpable enthusiasm, giving her a standing ovation before she sang a single note.

“You’re going to get me all emotional and my eyelashes are going to fall off!” said a sequined-catsuit wearing Twain, when she first addressed the fans.

But the show wasn’t all glitz and glamour, as Twain stuck close to her Northern Ontario roots via two horses she rode on stage — a black one for “I Ain’t No Quitter” and a white one featured during “Still The One” ( The Toronto Sun called it “most dramatic and beautiful part of the show”) — and a campfire segment, during which four audience members were invited onstage.

She also invited her sister Carrie-Ann on stage, as well as Canadian songwriter team RyanDan.

“We were the hicks from the sticks. We really didn’t have much,” she said of her family, according to the Canadian Press. “I talk about my mother a lot because I miss her. She passed away a long time ago and she never got to see any of my success…. I wouldn’t have made it onstage without her. So it’s kind of sad she couldn’t see it.”

Throughout the night, Twain wore outfits inspired by ones seen in some of her most iconic music videos — the highlight being the Bouwear-designed leopard ensemble from “That Don’t Impress Me Much.” Fans were also treated to the top hat/long jacket combo from “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!”

Twain has not toured since 2004, when she was promoting her “Up!” release. “Shania: Still the One” runs through Dec. 15 and returns with a 14-show engagement starting March 19.
