Zooey Deschanel on Hollywood weight standards

As if we didn’t love Zooey Deschanel enough already, the New Girl star is setting things straight about body image and how you don’t need to be pin-thin to be happy.

“Actresses have definitely gotten thinner over the course of my lifetime,” she tells the February issue of Glamour Magazine. “Women I admired growing up – Debra Winger, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep – were beautiful and thin, but not too thin. There are a lot of actresses who are unhealthy-skinny. I’m a very small person, and if I lost 15 pounds, I’d look like them; it’s scary. For young girls, what does that say?”

But Zooey isn’t the only A-lister speaking out about Tinseltown’s unrealistic body expectations.

The Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence also recently revealed that she’s considered a “fat actress” by Hollywood standards, later adding that, “I’d rather look chubby on screen and like a person in real life.”

So while the two leading ladies remain true to their health, instead of others’ perceptions of what looks good, Zoe admits that the pressure to be painfully skinny in “the biz” isn’t as bad as some may think.

“You do not need to look or be anorexic to be successful in Hollywood,” the quirky starlet confirms. “The range of what’s acceptable is a lot larger than what people believe. “It’s just about doing what you like so that when you look at yourself, you’re not disgusted. And I’m all about unintentional. I’m not a calculated person.”
