Barons trade veterans Gayle, Jones ahead of deadline

With the AJHL trade deadline two days away, the Fort McMurray Oil Barons have begun the process of unloading some of their veteran talent.

MyMcMurray has learned that the Barons will send leading scorer Danny Gayle to the West Kelowna Warriors of the British Columbia Hockey League in exchange for an as-yet unnamed forward.

They will also trade F Doug Jones to the Drayton Valley Thunder for future considerations.

The deals have not yet been confirmed by the team.

Gayle played in the Western Hockey League for the Calgary Hitmen before returning to Junior A; his rights were acquired from the Lloydminster Bobcats in September for local forward Jessey Touchette and future considerations.

He scored 9 goals and 18 assists in 37 games.

Jones’ rights were acquired from the Kindersley Klippers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League for forward Brett Printz; he was previously the leading scorer for the Drumheller Dragons. He scored 8 goals and 3 assists in 21 games with the MOB.

Earlier today, the MOB’s archrival, the Spruce Grove Saints, acquired former Barons forward Kevin Lacroix from the Flin Flon Bombers of the SJHL.

The Barons will travel to Spruce Grove tomorrow night to take on the first-place Saints.

The trades will bring the MOB to a 23-man roster, which is the lower limit that goes into effect after the deadline on Thursday.
