Hospital isolating patients after rise in gastrointestinal illness

The local hospital is taking precautions after an increase in the number of people suffering from gastrointestinal illness that started Friday.

Fort McMurray medical officer of health Dr. Gerhard Benade says it’s something that’s going around the whole city.

“We don’t have the final diagnosis of the bug causing this, but it looks very much like the norovirus-like gastroenteritis going across Alberta and certainly in Fort McMurray this winter,” he said.

Gastroenteritis is commonly called the stomach flu.

They’re isolating patients in one unit of the hospital and asking visitors to use discretion, especially if they’re showing symptoms.
