AHS: Increase in physicians to Northern Alberta

More and more physicians are being recruited to the North.

Alberta Health Services says last year Fort McMurray gained one new family physician and three new specialists.

The North Zone also gained a third physician resource planner who identifies and pursues international and domestic recruitment opportunities.

They work with community partners and organizations such as the Rural Physician Action Plan, Health Advisory Councils, and independent community physician recruitment and retention committees.

Last year, nearly 40 general practitioners and specialists were recruited to rural communities in the North compared to almost 25 in 2011 – that’s roughly a 60% increase.
