Reports of an attempted child abduction in Abasand

Yesterday, police responded to a report of an attempted child abduction in the Abasand area.

The investigation shows that an 11-year old girl was walking to Dr. Clark School, when she was approached by a man on foot who grabbed her elbow.

RCMP say there is no distinct description of the man, and that the investigation in on-going.

Constable Christina Wilkins says that incidents like this should always be reported.

“These types of allegations or complaints are very serious in nature and its good that we remind ourselves that we are responsible for our personal safety.”

RCMP notified the school board, which prompted some schools to send a letter home with it’s students.

Parents are being asked to not instill fear in their children, and to report all and any suspicious activity to police.

RCMP are reminding you to refresh on tips on how to stay safe when approached by a stranger.

Wilkins says that your guard should go up when you’re approached by someone you done know.

“Take a step back, have a look at your surroundings, and have a look at where some of your exit routes may be, or who you could go to, or businesses you could go to, if you needed help.”

She says that there are many ways to stay safe.

“It’s very hard to give you an absolute because every circumstance every situation will be different but it certainly be aware of whats going on, if you’re confronted by someone get away from that situation and tell somebody about it.”

At this time, RCMP do not believe that there is any danger to the girl, any other children or the public.

The following are a few safety tips for students and parents:
o         Children should never go anywhere unless a parent/guardian knows where they are going. They should never play in, or travel through, deserted or isolated areas.
o         Young children should be accompanied by a trusted adult or older youth when walking anywhere to address a number of concerns including: strangers, traffic and the elements.
o         Children should never accept anything from a stranger such as a ride or food/gifts without being under the supervision of a parent/guardian.
o         Children should never say they are alone if they answer the phone, and should not answer the door if they are alone.
o         Children of any age should report any suspicious behaviour or incidents to a parent, guardian, school author or police officer.

The RCMP encourage parents to talk to their kids, and encourage open dialogue about matters such as strangers, traffic safety and overall personal safety.
