Redford won't rule out any budget options

Alison Redford says she’s not ruling out any ideas on getting the province’s budget back on track.

The Premier told PC members in a telephone town hall last night that all options have to be open.

“We’ve got to make sure that we’re putting in place the systems that we need for all of us to thrive, and our economy to thrive,” she said.

But she also said that the government will look at spending before taxes.

“I think that there’s an opportunity to make sure our programs are sustainable, to make sure that we have competitively low tax rates, and to continue to grow the economy,” she said. “So, as we move ahead, we have priorities, but one of them certainly has nothing to do with raising taxes.”

But Redford also says she won’t rule out new taxes – they just won’t be brought in yet.

“Before we start talking about these issues, we want to make sure that Albertans have confidence that we’ve done absolutely everything that we can in government to be prudent, and responsible, and accountable,” she added.

The Calgary Herald reports that the government will launch a website breaking down how much it could save through tax hikes or spending cuts.
