Mark Messier to headline One-on-One Banquet in May

The Keyano College Foundation has announced it will be bringing hockey star Mark Messier to its 2nd annual One on One Banquet.

The event in May will raise money for the  Huskies Athletic Endowment.

Joining Messier is Kelly Chase and mid to late 80’s Oiler’s players Glenn Anderson, and Dave Lumley and Flames’ players Theo Fleury, Joel Otto and Jim Peplinski.

Director of Sport and Wellness at Keyano Wade Kolmel says the banquet is about the “Battle of Alberta”

“It’s about rivalries, its about the Calgary Flames players that pushed the Oiler’s and the Oiler’s that pushed back. We’re looking forward to seeing an exchange of stories that you know you don’t necessarily hear over a television or a public feed.”

VP of Community Relations Cindy Amerongen says that once the fund is at the $500,000 mark, the college can start giving out annual awards.

“We can use to attract high level and high caliber students and student athletes to the college.  The whole point of it is to augment their travel, their life, their tuition at the college and to help bring new people into the community.”

Shawn Chaulk is a chair member for the banquet and also a Keyano class of ’88 alumni.

He says that the fund helps attract athletes to come here.

“The more that you can put on teh table the more you can entice them to come here through scholarships and burseries and things like that….It’s going to be win-win, you’re going to do well, and your going to attract good people.”

There will be a four course meal, and a silent and live auction.

Last years special guest was Wayne Gretzky and the event raised $210-thousand dollars.

The date is Friday May 10th at 6pm on the Alberta Trades Field in Keyano’s Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre.

Sponsorship opportunities are now available ranging from $7500 to $15,000 that include benefits and access to Messier.

A limited number of tables will be sold for $5,000 which includes seating for 10.
