East coast pipeline viable even if Keystone approved

TransCanada says the idea of an oil sands pipeline to New Brunswick isn’t just a “plan B”.

CEO Russ Girling told Bloomberg that even if his company’s Keystone XL project gets the green light, shipping bitumen east still makes sense because production keeps climbing.

He says he expects approval for Keystone to come in a few weeks to a couple of months.

He also plans to decide by the end of next month whether to go ahead with reversing existing pipelines to get bitumen east, and building new pipe to connect with Saint John.

That construction would start in 2015.
