4-day week proposed to solve Public School deficit

Budget constraints might force Fort McMurray public schools to create a 4-day week.

The provincial New Democrats say the proposal shows that the province is short-changing education.

Critic David Eggen says underfunding is forcing districts like Fort McMurray to consider hurting education and cutting pay of some staff.

Superintendent Dennis Parsons tells the Canadian Press they can’t make up their projected 4.4 million dollar deficit just through savings and running a lesser operation.

He says they could create a four-day week by shuffling professional development days and making scheduling changes, increasing the average school day by 11 minutes.
