Province to crack down on grow ops

The provincial government is ramping up its effort to shut down mariajuana grow ops.

Justice Minister Jonathan Denis says they’ve struck an expert panel and will be consulting with communities to get input from Albertans.

Denis says there’s a good reason to crack down.

“Because it’s increasing, and I don’t want to get it out of control,” he said. “In 2011, in Calgary, 97 grow ops were busted, and that’s only the ones that we know of.”

Denis says they’ll gather input from people both online and in person until the end of May.

“We want to find out better ways that we can detect these grow ops, and better ways that we can remediate these grow ops once they’ve been found,” he said.

Denis says he wants to draft new legislation to deal with grow ops by next Spring.
