Pope Benedict XVI retires today; first pontiff to do so in 600 years

Canada’s three cardinals have said their farewells to Pope Benedict the 16th.

He met with all cardinals as part of his final day as pontiff before retiring.

The 85 year old has spent almost eight years as Pope.

At 9 a-m this morning, he will leave the palace and fly to the papal retreat south of Rome — and noon, he’ll officially becomes the first pontiff in 600 years to resign.

His successor will be chosen in a conclave next month.
