Hair Massacure kicks off today, raising money for children's charities

Turning Fort McMurray pink, dying hair pink, or maybe cutting it off – its all apart of Hair Massacure, a fundraiser that kicked off this morning.

It’s raising money and awareness for children’s charities that help Northern Albertans.

Mayor Melissa Blake was at Save On Foods this morning and had the first “pinking” of hair (she did a streak)

Participants will dye their hair pink to raise money and awareness for the campaign, and then on the 15th the fundraiser will end with participants shaving and donating their hair.

Growth and Development Director Jessica Moyes in a release says over 45% of the families served by the Ronald MacDonald House come from Northern Alberta.

The event started and was organized in Edmonton by a Ronald MacDonald family, staff and volunteers.

The daughter, Kali MacDonald inspired it during a fight with childhood cancer, where she lost her hair three times during treatment.

She has been in remission now for 10 years.

The funds will go to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation (Pediatric Oncology), Make-A-Wish® Northern Alberta and Ronald McDonald House® Northern Alberta.
