Ecojustice calls for Suncor, Syncrude charges

Suncor, oilsands project

An environmental group is asking the federal government to press charges against Suncor and Syncrude.

Ecojustice says upgrading stacks used by the companies are emitting 1,000 tonnes of pollution each year, according to government stats.

That includes compounds that can cause cancer in humans and impact the survival of fish.

The group says because the Fisheries Act bans any deposit of substances like that in water that has fish in it, the companies have to at least be investigated as to whether those emissions are contaminating the water.

But the companies tell the Edmonton Journal they’re already within the law on emission limits.
