The federal government is defending the oil sands south of the border.
Natural resources minister Joe Oliver is in Houston, Texas to visit an oil sands refinery and the annual CERA conference.
Oliver told American reporters that Canada is the environmentally responsible choice for U.S. oil imports, since other countries make barely any effort to control greenhouse gas emissions.
A spokesman with the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association told the Sun that lobbying by the feds could be pushing the Obama administration towards approving the Keystone XL line.
