Vermont moving to block eastbound oil sands pipeline

The plan to get oil sands crude to the east coast is running into a roadblock in Vermont.

The Senate there has given preliminary approval to a bill that would make it tougher to get approval if owners of a pipeline want to change its use.

Politicians are reacting to rumours that the owners of the Portland to Montreal pipeline want to make it flow east instead of west, so it can bring bitumen through New England.

That would allow it to be loaded onto ships in Maine for export, which would help deal with the price differential.
