Snow removal wrapping up after record year

Snow removal is wrapping up in Fort McMurray.

Kelly Colbourne with Road Maintenance says it was one of the toughest years ever.

“I’ve been here in Fort McMurray since 2002, and this is the most snow I’ve seen,” she said, “but talking to residents that have been here all their life, the date that was thrown at me was that this is the most snow that has hit Fort McMurray since the 60s.”

She says staff had to put in a boatload of extra hours.

“The snowfall we’ve had this year has been unbelievable,” she said. “It’s increased our snow removal efforts twofold.”

“What normally would take us 5-6 weeks to get through the city for a residential cleanup, and a primary and secondary route cleanup, is now taking 11 weeks.”

But on the bright side, she says people were much better at getting cars out of the way when no parking signs went up this year.
