Suncor given deadline on wastewater pond

Suncor, oilsands project

It’s been quite a week for Suncor.

The company is now under an enforcement order from the provincial government over an unsafe wastewater treatment pond.

Pond C, which originally failed a toxicity test two years ago, has failed additional tests since then.

The pond usually discharges into the Athabasca River, but that’s been suspended until the problem gets fixed.

The province says it looks like that’s because of high levels of organic compounds.

Under the government order, Suncor has until the end of April to complete a number of tasks, including identifying the source of the problem, and enhanced monitoring of the wastewater.

This sanction is unrelated to Monday’s pipe leak.
