Food Bank use continues to surge

Due to government cuts in funding, the Wood Buffalo Food Bank Association is unable to run their successful Basic Shelf Program this year. The program graduates more than 50 students per year, taking them from low-income situations and molding them into active contributors in Wood Buffalo. Photo supplied by the Food Bank.

More and more people are using the Food Bank.

It sent 179 hampers out this March compared to 110 last year;  an increase of 63-percent.

That also marks this past March as the second-busiest month in the last two years with last December topping it sending 203 hampers out.

January saw a 30-percent increase from last year, and February hiked 33-percent.

Since January it’s sent home 484 hampers, and versus last year that’s up 45-percent.

The Food Bank is asking the community to help out by donating at your local grocery store, to the food bank itself, or by hosting a food drive.

It says it’s in need of canned meat, fish and veggies, pasta sauce, jello, cereal, canned pasta, stuffing, broth, instant mashed potatoes and tomato soup.
