The Supreme Court of Canada has refused to hear an appeal from an aboriginal group trying to stop an oilsands expansion.
The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation wanted a regulatory board to examine whether it has been properly consulted before Shell’s Jackpine mine expansion was approved.
The board says governments need to decide how much consultation is adequate – The Alberta Court of Appeal agreed.
The band says it means the board will make a decision on the expansion without considering its right to a proper consultation.
The top court has also refused to hear a similar case from B.C.
