New bylaw sparks taxi industry strike

Some taxi drivers may walk off the job next week.

In a release from Sun Taxi it says drivers will walk of the job at 6AM next Thursday for 24 hours.

However, 4 other companies say they’re not aware of any impending strike.

A spokesperson for Sun Taxi later clarified the drivers will be choosing themselves whether to strike.

The city recently passed a vehicle for hire bylaw that created mandatory training for drivers, flat rates for trips outside the city limits, and allow the Chief Taxi Inspector to create new standards for vehicles.

In the release from Sun Taxi it says it’s detrimental to the industry and to the interests, safety and convenience of the public.

It says the bylaw was constructed with little feedback from the industry.
