Taxi drivers to strike Thursday morning

Most of Fort McMurray’s taxis are set to go on strike on Thursday morning.

That’s confirmed by Sun Taxi’s owner Ron MacNeill, who says drivers are fed up with the city’s new taxi bylaw.

The new taxi raises the price of licensing  and appoints a unilateral Chief Taxi Inspector, among other issues.

MacNeill says from what he’s heard, driver participation will be very high when they begin the 24-hour strike at 6 am on Thursday.

“Well it’s supposed to be all of them,” he said.

“I figure minimum is going to be 80%, and it could be as high as 100”

MacNeill said the licensing issue is a particularly frustrating one.

“A license for a taxi went from $150 to $1000,” he said.

“And even at the meeting when they did the second and third reading, and passed it, they had no justification for it”
