First steel goes up at Shell Place

It’s going to be a busy summer on Mac Island.

Today the first piece of steel was put into place for the new Shell Place expansion.

COO Tim Reid says they’re moving into a new era.

“I think the exciting part for us is today it’s about starting to think about the experience of sitting in the stands and having a hot dog and watching your first football game out there, or baseball game and its less talking about design,” he said.

He also talked about how the construction marks a change for the work he’ll do.

“For me the work is different now. Now the work is actually about finding partners that will use this facility, and most importantly finding opportunities to bring programming to this facility.”

Reid says more announcements are coming this summer including naming rights for the football stadium, and possible sports teams for the baseball and football stadiums.

And he says new projects like this have people outside of Fort McMurray talking.

“For the last four years with Macdonald Island Park we’ve spent a lot of time begging people to come and take an honest look at Macdonald Island and more importantly Fort McMurray,” he said.

“So the conversation is not necessarily about if they’re going to come anymore, it’s about when they’re going to come.”

Mayor Melissa Blake was one of the speakers at the construction site:
