$10m for study that includes oil sands water

The government is putting money into finding out whether fish can survive long term in water from oilsands projects.

10 million dollars is being given to 18 research projects that support the Government of Alberta’s “Water for Life” strategy.

The Edmonton Journal reports that one project involves work done by the University of Alberta that will lead to the safe release of oilsands process water.

Research there is focusing on water from Syncrude’s operations.

Even though process water is different in different operations, the scientists are hopeful that their work can still be applied to the rest of the industry.

Alberta Innovates – Energy and Environment Solutions selected the 18 projects for the Water Resource Sustainability Program.

Other projects range from understanding rural water quality perceptions to confirming reclamation goals, design criteria and policy for a sustainable wetland habitat.
