Environmental group says oil sands recommendations not taken seriously

The province is taking harsh criticism from an environmental group over its development of oilsands.

2 years after the Pembina Institute put forward recommendations on managing the oilsands, it now has issued a progress report.

Spokesman Simon Dyer says the government has done very little on 17 of the 19 recommendations.

” Alberta’s emissions are increasing faster than anywhere else in North America, and we don’t have a credible plan in place.”

Dyer says major progress has been made in two areas, and moderate progress in five others.

“I thinks Alberta has a long way to go before it can demonstrate that it’s a leader in environmental management.”

He says immediate action is needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

He points to the Keystone XL debate as an example of the province failing to address environmental concerns.

“The question is not whether Alberta can afford to properly regulate the oil sands industry but whether we can afford not to.”
